Germany makes high demands on environmental safety of building materials. Pollutants can be emitted during production, utilization phase and recycling or disposal processes. Developing new composite materials, it is necessary to consider all potential environmental influences as well as health and safety.

The whole lifecycle of the composite building materials that are in the focus of the research group Fortschrittskolleg Verbund.NRW is analyzed in terms of environmental safety at the Institute of Building Materials Research and Chair of Building Materials of the RWTH Aachen University, led by junior professor Anya Vollpracht.

The production- and recycling processes will be analyzed and the emissions of the utilization phase will be determined by experimental studies. Based on these results a forecast for the temporal development of the emissions should be given and an evaluation relating to the environmental influence should be made.

The first subproject is an examination during utilization phase of the innovative material carbon concrete composite, C³. Leaching by irrigation will be tested in the laboratory and on site. Because of possible emissions from the polymer coating of the carbon reinforcement, special attention should be turned to the testing of a cracked surface. Also mutual reactions between organic substances and traces of heavy metals leached from the concrete are imaginable.

Partly depending on the materials deployed by this research group and depending on their installation situations and recycling processes, further testing of different materials will be made concerning leaching processes as well as gas release of volatiles or safety at work.
