Composite constructions in buildings are composites of two or more basic materials, that complement each other. While there is a wide variety of applications, for example the thermal insulation composite system for enhanced insulation or composite-steel constructions for a higher bearing capacity, all composite constructions have in common that different materials with different recycling concepts are joint permanently.

To allow high-quality recycling of each used material, a separation into homogeneous wastes in the process of deconstruction must be reached. Presently, most of the currently used composite constructions are glued or cast together, leading to almost non-separable composites. This is why composite constructions need to be optimized in terms of deconstruction and recycling at the end of their life time.

The goal of the research project at the Institut für unterirdisches Bauen under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dietmar Mähner is to optimize existing constructions and to give recommendations for the development of new constructions. The first step is to analyze, classify and judge currently used constructions in terms of separability and recyclability. Subsequently, optimized constructions will be theoretically developed and compared to the existing ones. In follow-up experiments, the newly developed constructions will be evaluated regarding construction and deconstruction processes.

Finally, the results should be used to design a decision tool for architects, engineers or builder-owners. This tool should give recommendations to the use of constructions suitable to recycling technologies at the end of the exploitation phase.
